# Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu detention > Developing situation record from CLSTR: https://clstr.news/situations/tanzanian-opposition-leader-tundu-lissu-detention > Updated: 2026-10-27T14:59:27.000Z. Sources: 17. Developments: 2. Tundu Lissu, leader of the Chadema opposition party, announced a hunger strike in late October 2026 to protest prison authorities’ refusal to allow him private, court-ordered consultations with his legal team. Lissu has been detained for over 18 months facing treason charges that carry a potential death sentence. Lissu ended the hunger strike after prison authorities permitted him to meet privately with his brother and legal counsel. While the prison service denied reports of a hunger strike, Lissu’s legal team confirmed he had refused meals to protest restrictions on his legal access and expressed concerns regarding his health and reliance on medication during the protest. The detention of Lissu, alongside reports of abductions involving government critics, has drawn international scrutiny toward the human rights record of President Samia Suluhu Hassan. While the Tanzanian government has rejected accusations of widespread abuses and stated its commitment to human rights, the opposition continues to call for electoral reforms. A final judgment in the treason case is scheduled for November 6. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-27: Tundu Lissu ends hunger strike in Tanzania Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu ended a hunger strike after being granted private meetings with his lawyers and brother while facing treason charges. 11 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tanzania-opposition-leader-tundu-lissu-ends-hunger-strike ### 2026-10-24: Tanzania opposition leader Tundu Lissu to begin hunger strike Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu will start a hunger strike on Monday to protest the denial of private legal consultations while facing treason charges. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tanzania-opposition-leader-tundu-lissu-to-begin-hunger-strike --- Cite as: Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu detention.
