Research continues to clarify the relationship between tea and coffee consumption and various health outcomes. A Flinders University study, published in Nutrients, analyzed data from approximately 9,700 women aged 65 and older over a decade. The findings indicated that regular tea consumption is associated with slightly higher hip bone mineral density (BMD), an effect potentially driven by catechins assisting in bone tissue maintenance. This benefit was particularly significant in women with obesity. Epidemiologist Enwu Liu noted that even small improvements in bone density can lead to a reduction in fractures across large populations.

Regarding coffee, the relationship remains complex. While moderate consumption is linked to reduced risks of Parkinson’s, liver disease, and type 2 diabetes, drinking more than five cups daily is associated with lower BMD. This risk may be higher among women with higher alcohol intake.

Newer findings from Oxford University have introduced concerns regarding beverage temperature. An observational study involving nearly one million people found that regularly consuming beverages at temperatures of 65 degrees Celsius or higher is associated with a three-fold increase in the risk of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma. The risk may further increase for those consuming six or more hot drinks daily, though researchers emphasize these findings show correlation rather than direct causation.

## Timeline

### 2026-10-03: Health studies link beverage temperature and consumption to cancer and bone density risks

New studies link very hot beverages (above 65°C) to increased esophageal cancer risk, while tea and moderate coffee consumption show varying correlations with bone density and other health benefits.

### 2026-10-02: Flinders University study links tea consumption to higher bone density in older women

A Flinders University study of 9,700 women suggests tea consumption is associated with higher hip bone mineral density, while high coffee intake may be linked to lower density.

### 2026-09-23: Tea and coffee consumption impacts on bone health and caffeine sensitivity

Studies indicate tea may support bone density better than high coffee consumption, while genetic factors like the CYP1A2 gene determine individual caffeine sensitivity and metabolism.
