Archaeological research published in the Journal of Cultural Heritage has provided new evidence regarding the demographic composition of the workforce that created China’s Terracotta Army. By analyzing 79 fingerprints found on 36 warriors in Pit 1, researchers used statistical modeling of ridge breadth to estimate the identities of the laborers.

The study challenges the long-held assumption that the project relied almost exclusively on adult male laborers. Findings indicate that the workforce was more diverse, with approximately 45% of the prints attributed to adult men, roughly 33% to adult women, and about 22% to children or youths under the age of 15.

Researchers noted that while the data does not confirm exact proportions, it suggests that Qin Dynasty workshops likely employed men, women, and young people, who may have served as apprentices under the laws of that era. The identification process faced complexities due to clay shrinkage during firing and similarities in ridge patterns across different demographics.
