Sources: 102. Developments: 4. Details regarding the horror film ‘The Exorcist: Martyrs’ emerged through leaked plot descriptions and character information. The project, directed by Mike Flanagan, is described as a complete reboot of the franchise rather than a sequel to the 2023 film ‘The Exorcist: Believer’. This reboot aims to revitalize the series following previous unfavorable results, providing Flanagan with the creative freedom to establish a new direction without being strictly tied to prior continuity. The narrative follows NYPD homicide detective Julie Miller, played by Scarlett Johansson, investigating murders linked to a satanic serial killer. Following the initial leaks, Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for the film. The production is a collaboration between several entities, including Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Red Room Pictures. The ensemble cast features Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Father William, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle as Detective Gina Restrepo, and Jacobi Jupe. John Leguizamo portrays ‘Father Sunday’, a killer whose crimes mimic the martyrdom of Catholic saints. In October 2026, Universal Pictures released a teaser and an official trailer. The story is set thirteen years after detective Julie Miller ended the reign of ‘Father Sunday’. She is drawn back into a dark investigation when a new killer leaves her name written in blood at a church crypt, appearing to target both her and her twelve-year-old son. Leguizamo described the production as ‘the scariest movie he has ever participated in’. Flanagan intends to blend crime thriller elements, similar to ‘Seven’ and ‘The Silence of the Lambs’, with the possession horror characteristic of the original franchise. The film is scheduled for theatrical release in the United States on March 12, 2027. ## Claims - Mike Flanagan is the writer and director of The Exorcist: Martyrs.
