A series of thefts involving memorial items has been reported at cemeteries in Germany. In September 2026, unknown perpetrators stole two valuable metal memorial plaques from a family grave at the Im Lömmelscheid cemetery in Halver. The theft was discovered after the items had been missing since May.

In October 2026, further incidents occurred in the Merzig-Wadern district of Saarland. At the Reimsbach cemetery in Beckingen, thieves stole twelve bronze grave crosses bearing the names of fallen soldiers, reportedly using tools to remove the crosses along with their heavy concrete foundations. Additionally, at a memorial site in Weiskirchen, two large bronze plaques commemorating victims of the 79th Infantry Division from the Second World War were removed from a sandstone wall.

Police are investigating these incidents as aggravated theft and the disturbance of the peace of the dead.
