The city of Lübeck is marking the 125th anniversary of the publication of Thomas Mann’s novel, ‘Buddenbrooks. The Decline of a Family’.

Initial celebrations included various readings and special exhibitions. While the Buddenbrookhaus museum has been closed for renovations since 2020 and is not expected to reopen until 2030, the exhibition ‘Family Affairs. 125 Years of Buddenbrooks’ was organized at the Sankt Annen-Museum to explore the novel’s themes of family dynamics and societal expectations.

The commemorative program scheduled for late October features musical performances and improvisational theater. High-profile attendees include the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, State Minister Dr. Wolfram Weimer.
