Research efforts regarding the Thwaites Glacier in West Antarctica have focused on understanding sub-ice melting processes and their impact on global sea levels.

Data recovered from the Ran, an autonomous underwater vehicle lost in early 2024, revealed that strong undersea currents are causing significant erosion to the ice layer beneath the Dotson Ice Shelf. This research utilized multibeam sonar to map the ice base, confirming that ocean-ice interactions are accelerating melting.

To further investigate these hidden areas, the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) is employing specialized monitoring techniques. These include hot-water drilling to create access points through the ice, allowing for the deployment of oceanographic instruments, robotic vehicles, and sensors to measure temperature, pressure, and currents.

A recent study has expanded this monitoring by identifying hundreds of rare seismic events, or ‘ice quakes,’ occurring in Antarctica. Researchers recorded more than 360 such events between 2010 and 2023, with 245 concentrated near the ocean-facing end of the Thwaites Glacier. These events are often triggered when thin icebergs break off, flip over, and strike the glacier.

The study noted a significant spike in these events near the Thwaites Glacier during the 2018–2020 period, coinciding with faster ice flow observed via satellite. Because the Thwaites Glacier, often called the ‘Doomsday Glacier,’ could potentially raise global sea levels by approximately 10 feet (3 meters) if destabilized, understanding these ice quakes is considered essential for predicting future sea-level rise.
