# Tiber River drought and Roman ruins exposure

Extreme heat and a prolonged drought in Rome have caused the Tiber River’s water levels to drop significantly. This water crisis has revealed the submerged stone remains of the ancient Pons Neronianus, commonly known as Nero’s Bridge, near Castel Sant’Angelo.

Giovanni Giganti, a coordinator for Rome’s water management and civil protection, reported that the river’s flow has fallen below 80 cubic meters per second, which is approximately half of the historical seasonal average. While the structure is associated with Emperor Nero, scholars believe it may have been constructed as early as 39 AD during the reign of Caligula.

In addition to the ancient ruins, the receding waters have exposed various modern objects upstream, such as bicycles, scooters, refrigerators, and a car. Similar phenomena were previously observed during a drought in 2022.
