The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport announced the opening of the Tirano Variant on the SS 38 ‘dello Stelvio’. The 6.6-km bypass, which cost €254.4 million, features a natural tunnel, an artificial tunnel, two Adda viaducts, and several roundabouts and underpasses.

Designed to divert heavy traffic from the historic centre of Tirano, the project aims to reduce congestion, travel times, and emissions while improving safety for residents and tourists. Vice-Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini attended the inauguration, describing the project as ‘an operation awaited for 40 years’. The new route links Villa di Tirano with the Campone roundabout and is expected to reduce travel times by up to thirty minutes.
