Musician and producer Todd Rundgren has drawn attention for his criticisms of pop star Taylor Swift during an interview with Vulture. Rundgren described Swift as the ‘apotheosis of mediocrity’ and suggested that she has ‘ruined music.’

Rundgren proposed a theory regarding the music industry’s shift toward female artists, arguing that when young male consumers began spending more on video games in the 1990s, labels pivoted to target young women with disposable income. While he praised Lady Gaga as a ‘real musician’ due to her classical training, he dismissed Swift’s technical skills as a singer, songwriter, and dancer. He further noted that if he were to create an album to mock a specific artist, Swift would be his target, though he acknowledged her influence as a role model for multiple generations of women.

Critical scrutiny of Swift has intensified following the release of her expanded album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore’. The project received a 4.0/10 from Pitchfork and a 43/100 on Metacritic, with critics questioning its emotional depth and commercial motivations. Amidst this backlash, Swift released the song ‘Patient Zero’ from the same project, accompanied by a gothic thriller music video directed by Swift and starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Despite the mixed reviews for the album, Swift received the inaugural Artist Director Honors and won Video of the Year for ‘The Fate of Ophelia’ at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards.
