Jean-Pierre Fabre, president of the Alliance nationale pour le changement (ANC), has challenged the legitimacy of Faure Gnassingbé’s administration, claiming the government is becoming increasingly isolated. 

Fabre cited a January 2026 ruling by the ECOWAS Court of Justice regarding Togo’s 2024 constitutional reform. While the court determined that the conditions under which the reform was adopted constituted an “unconstitutional change of government” under the African Charter on Democracy, the ruling did not formally dissolve the institutions of the Fifth Republic or abrogate the 2024 Constitution. 

Despite Fabre’s claims of isolation, diplomatic records indicate the Togolese government maintains active engagement with European partners and regional mediation efforts, such as roles within the African Union concerning the Great Lakes crisis.
