Sources: 7. Developments: 2. The city of Torino has authorized a project to transform the former Nebiolo foundries in the Aurora district into a multifunctional complex. Led by the Italian Islamic Confederation (CII), the development is intended to include a mosque for approximately 1,000 worshippers, alongside non-religious facilities such as a student dormitory with subsidized housing, a library, and spaces for cultural activities and interreligious dialogue. The project has triggered significant political debate. While Mayor Stefano Lo Russo and the Democratic Party (PD) support the initiative as part of an urban regeneration plan, describing it as a modern facility that serves public safety, opposition leaders have voiced strong criticism. Piedmont Vice President Maurizio Marrone and members of Fratelli d’Italia have raised concerns regarding social tension and what they termed “wild Islamization” of the neighborhood. Marrone has suggested legislative amendments to establish minimum distances between religious buildings to potentially obstruct the development. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-08: Turin approves mosque project at former Nebiolo foundry Turin has approved a mosque project at the former Nebiolo foundry as part of a larger redevelopment plan, sparking intense political debate over urban integration and religious identity. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turin-approves-mosque-project-at-former-nebiolo-foundry ### 2026-10-05: Torino approves multifunctional complex including large mosque at former Nebiolo foundries Torino has approved a project to convert the former Nebiolo foundries into a multifunctional complex featuring a large mosque, a student dormitory, and cultural spaces, amid intense local political debate. 5 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/torino-mosque-project-sparks-regional-political-opposition --- Cite as: Torino mosque and urban redevelopment project.
