Tottenham Hotspur has experienced a poor start to the 2026-27 Premier League season, falling to the bottom of the table following a 3-2 home defeat against Aston Villa. Despite summer investments totaling nearly £400 million, the club has secured only two points from five matches.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi described the squad as “too fragile” and “unstable,” stating he has never seen a team quite like this in his 14-year coaching career. Following the defeat, defender Jan Paul van Hecke criticized the team’s performance and defensive lapses as “unacceptable.” He specifically cited poor game management, noting that teammate Andy Robertson opted to keep the ball in play while Micky van de Ven received treatment, a decision that contributed to Aston Villa scoring while the team was effectively reduced to 10 men.

Following the international break, the club’s struggles continued with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Van Hecke faced intense criticism after allowing Bryan Mbeumo space to score the opening goal. Former midfielder Jamie O’Hara labeled the £52 million defender a “donkey” on talkSPORT, questioning the value of his signing. While media outlets provided middling ratings for Van Hecke, analysts noted that substitute Micky van de Ven provided much-needed stability to the defense in the match's closing stages.
