Tottenham Hotspur has undergone a significant period of transition characterized by heavy transfer spending and fluctuating on-pitch performance. Following the permanent departure of academy talent Will Lankshear to Middlesbrough, former manager Tim Sherwood criticized the club’s strategy of investing in expensive attacking players, which he suggested blocks development pathways for youth.

In response to criticism regarding the club’s recent struggles, including a period of flirting with relegation, sporting director Johan Lange defended the club’s recruitment model. Lange noted that advanced global scouting has increased competition for a limited pool of talent, driving up costs. To overhaul the squad, the club invested over £300m to sign eight first-team players, including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio, and Jan Paul van Hecke.
