In Togo, the official recognition of Majesty Guin Fio Akouété Têko Apétovi V as the customary chief of the Anfoin canton was celebrated with processions and traditional performances following a formal decree. Meanwhile, in Cameroon, 19 chiefs from the Akwa Canton issued a communiqué to clarify the details of King Akwa Mbanya’s upcoming coronation in Douala, emphasizing the sanctity of the historical site for the ritual. However, tensions have emerged regarding the legitimacy of certain appointments. In Côte d'Ivoire, a protest committee in Songon-Te is contesting the prefectural appointment of a village chief, arguing the process resembled an election rather than following customary consultations. Similarly, in Togo, the designation of a canton chief in Ando has sparked disputes, highlighting the friction between state administrative recognition and local customary laws. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-02: Traditional chieftaincy disputes arise in Côte d'Ivoire and Togo Traditional chieftaincy appointments in Songon-Te, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ando, Togo, are being contested by local elders and families citing violations of customary laws. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/traditional-chieftaincy-disputes-arise-in-cte-divoire-and-togo ### 2026-09-21: Traditional leaders in Togo and Cameroon hold significant cultural ceremonies Traditional leaders in Togo and Cameroon mark significant cultural milestones: the official recognition of the Anfoin canton chief and preparations for the coronation of King Akwa Mbanya. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/traditional-leaders-in-togo-and-cameroon-hold-significant-cultural-ceremonies --- Cite as: Traditional leadership developments in West and Central-East.
