Reports from late September 2026 indicate several fatal and serious traffic accidents across North Macedonia and Bulgaria.

In North Macedonia, two heavy collisions occurred on September 19. One accident on the Bitola–Prilep road killed a 17-year-old passenger and injured four others. A second collision on the Kumanovo–Skopje highway resulted in the deaths of two men, aged 49 and 71, while leaving three others injured.

In Bulgaria, multiple incidents were recorded. An accident near Mramoren involving a Volkswagen and a Mercedes, attributed to excessive speed, left two people hospitalized.

On September 23, a fatal multi-vehicle collision occurred on the Stara Zagora–Kazanlak road near Muglizh, resulting in three deaths. The incident was reportedly triggered by a violent dispute between a father and son. Witnesses stated a 40-year-old man threw his father from a moving vehicle, dragging him for approximately two kilometers, before speeding up to overtake other vehicles and colliding head-on with an oncoming car. The victims included the driver, a woman, and an 84-year-old passenger. The father survived and is hospitalized in non-life-threatening condition. Unofficial reports suggest the driver may have been drug-dependent. This crash occurred on a stretch frequently called the ‘road of death’ due to its high accident rate.

On the same day, two additional people were killed in a head-on collision on the Kotel–Ticha road, bringing the total to five road fatalities reported within a single day in the region. Local officials, including the Mayor of Shipka, have called for increased vigilance regarding drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
