Recent data from Sweden and Norway indicate evolving trends in maritime and road safety. In Sweden, maritime intoxication offenses and jet ski rule violations have decreased, though driver's license revocations due to sobriety issues rose by 12 percent in the first half of 2026.

In Norway, authorities noted a 20 percent increase in speeding offenders during the summer, with some officials suggesting the rapid growth of the electric vehicle fleet may contribute to higher speeds due to silent operation and rapid acceleration.

By October 2026, Norway reported its highest traffic fatalities in ten years, with 95 deaths recorded in the first nine months of the year. This represents an increase of 11 deaths compared to the same period in 2025. September was identified as the deadliest month, accounting for 12 fatalities. Passenger car accidents and head-on collisions saw significant increases, with 47 fatalities in passenger cars and 38 in head-on collisions recorded so far this year. Regionally, Akershus has seen 17 fatalities, while Trøndelag reported a sharp rise from one death last year to eight this year.

There is particular concern regarding young road users; in September, half of the victims were under 30. Trygg Trafikk reported that 22 people aged 16 to 24 have died on Norwegian roads this year, the highest number for that demographic since 2013, with many victims being motorcycle riders. Demographically, men accounted for 74 of the 95 deaths.

In response to the figures, Transport Minister Kamzy Gunaratnam described the numbers as “scary high.” Meanwhile, Bård Hoksrud, leader of the parliamentary transport committee, criticized the government regarding a 150 billion NOK maintenance backlog and called for improvements to dangerous road sections.
