The driver reportedly alerted dispatchers to a brake failure immediately before the incident, which resulted in eleven wagons plunging into a ravine. While no injuries were reported, the accident caused significant material damage and halted rail traffic on the Karlovac–Rijeka line. Damir Lončarić, President of HŽ Infrastruktura, indicated that the railway infrastructure did not appear to be the cause and called for stricter inspections of private operators' equipment. The Croatian Transport Accident Investigation Agency launched an investigation into the technical failure. By October 12, repair efforts were underway to clear wreckage and address damage to the tracks, the overhead electrical network, and an embankment retaining wall. While full restoration timelines were not officially confirmed, reports suggested one track might return to service at a reduced speed of 20 kilometers per hour. The derailment has caused economic disruptions to the Port of Rijeka and regional transport routes. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-12: Meja railway derailment triggers emergency repairs in Croatia Repair efforts are underway in Croatia after a Transagent rail freight train derailed near Meja, damaging tracks and electrical lines.
