Transport workers in Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia are facing increasing levels of violence, theft, and extortion. 

In early August, reports emerged of targeted physical attacks against drivers in Ecuador and Peru. In Ecuador, a taxi driver was assaulted with knives and firearms during a robbery, while in Peru, a public transport driver was shot by individuals on a motorcycle during an incident suspected to be extortion.

By late August, the situation escalated into organized criminal activity affecting broader sectors. In Bolivia, heavy transport workers in Sucre reported that approximately 95% of heavy machinery in the region has been targeted for the theft of electronic components, causing significant individual financial losses. Meanwhile, in Peru, transport sectors continue to struggle with criminal gangs demanding protection money through extortion and contract killings. While the Peruvian government has offered reductions in traffic fines to business owners, critics maintain these measures do not address the underlying security crisis facing drivers.

As of late August, the security crisis in Bolivia has prompted heavy transport operators in Sucre to plan protests in response to the ongoing wave of component thefts. Additionally, security risks persist in Colombia, where the Ocaña–Aguachica corridor is identified as a high-risk area due to armed robberies and poor road conditions.
