On October 16, the Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train, ‘El Insurgente’, suffered significant service delays that left hundreds of passengers stranded, particularly at the Observatorio terminal. While official causes were not confirmed, reports suggested potential signaling or electrical failures. By October 20, disruptions expanded to include widespread highway blockades and social protests. In Oaxaca, a three-day blockade of the Oaxaca-Tuxtepec highway was initiated by residents protesting the alleged misappropriation of federal funds. In the State of Mexico, families of missing persons blocked the Mexico-Toluca highway near Lerma for approximately 20 hours. Additionally, social mobilizations by retirees and workers in Mexico City caused delays on major thoroughfares such as Paseo de la Reforma and Avenida Insurgentes. Other closures were attributed to infrastructure issues, including a sinkhole on the Veracruz-Poza Rica highway and various accidents and roadwork. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-20: Mexico faces widespread road closures and protests Mexico is experiencing major transit disruptions, including multi-day highway blockades in Oaxaca, protests on the Mexico-Toluca highway, and various road closures due to sinkholes and accidents. 10 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/protests-and-road-blockades-reported-in-mexico ### 2026-10-16: Mexico-Toluca Interurban Train delays strand hundreds of passengers Significant delays on the Mexico-Toluca ‘El Insurgente’ train caused massive passenger crowds and station closures, particularly at the Observatorio terminal, amid suspected signaling or power issues. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/mexico-toluca-interurban-train-delays-strand-hundreds-of-passengers --- Cite as: Transportation disruptions in Mexico.
