Nobel laureate Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar has received several honors and participated in academic engagements across Turkey. In Mardin’s Savur district, Sancar’s childhood home, the historic Hakkı Bey Mansion, was converted into the Aziz Sancar Museum to showcase his scientific achievements and promote regional tourism and scientific awareness. In Mersin, Sancar delivered an opening lecture at Mersin University, where the university also renamed its Advanced Technology Education Research and Application Center in his honor. Additionally, a conference hall at Mersin City Hospital was named after him, and he presented his latest research regarding DNA repair during a meeting with healthcare professionals. Sancar also visited Dicle University in Diyarbakır to deliver a seminar titled ‘A lifetime to science, a lifetime to humanity’. During this event, he discussed his research progress in brain cancer treatment, specifically focusing on glioblastoma. He noted that while experiments using a combination of temozolomide (TMZ) and EdU molecules have shown promising results in mice, further studies in larger animals are required before determining effectiveness in humans. Reflecting on his personal history, Sancar noted his birth in Savur and his previous experience teaching microbiology at Dicle University through a United Nations program. He also shared that he provides seminars in Turkey and other Turkic states without charge, having declined high-paying international speaking engagements that range from $10,000 to $100,000. Expanding on his advocacy for regional collaboration, Sancar attended the academic year opening ceremony at Adana Alparslan Türkeş Science and Technology University. There, he called for increased scientific and technological cooperation among the five major Turkic states—Turkey, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan. Recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hosted Professor Sancar and his wife, Gwen Boles Sancar, at the Presidential Complex.
