Tropic Biosciences, a biotechnology company based in Norfolk, has developed gene-edited bananas using CRISPR-Cas9 technology to resist browning. By altering the gene responsible for producing polyphenol oxidase, the enzyme that causes discoloration, the fruit can remain yellow and fresh for up to 24 hours after being sliced or peeled without altering its original taste or texture.

The innovation is intended to reduce food waste and lower CO2 emissions in the banana export sector. In the United Kingdom, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has approved a marketing notice for the bananas, classifying them as precision-bred organisms. This classification indicates that the genetic changes could have occurred through traditional breeding and do not involve DNA from unrelated species.

While the product awaits a safety review by the Food Standards Agency for English supermarkets, the technology has already received regulatory approval for import and consumption in Brazil and Japan.
