Tunisian activist Wael Naouar, a member of the Global Sumud Flotilla steering committee, is in critical condition following a hunger strike initiated on August 16 to protest his preventive detention. Naouar is being held at El Mornaguia prison alongside fellow activists Nabil Chanufi, Ghassan Henchiri, and Ghassan Bughdiri, who have been in detention for nearly six months following their involvement in a mission to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. As the hunger strike progressed from 21 to over 24 days, Naouar’s health deteriorated significantly. His lawyer, Bassem Trifi, reported that Naouar has lost 18kg and is experiencing low blood pressure, low blood sugar, difficulty breathing, difficulty speaking, migraines, vomiting blood, and dizziness. Reports indicate that despite these symptoms and the impact of extreme heat waves, he has not been transferred to a hospital and only receives weekly medical follow-ups.
