# Tunisian state control of highway infrastructure

The Tunisian government has opted to maintain state control over its strategic highway infrastructure by rejecting privatization efforts. Following a ministerial meeting, the government decided that Tunisie Autoroutes will remain the concessionaire for the A1 motorway (Hammam-Lif – M’saken) under a new agreement once the current contract expires in 2028.

Furthermore, Tunisie Autoroutes will be granted operating rights for the A2 motorway (Tunis – Jelma) upon its completion, which is anticipated in 2027. The A2 project, estimated to cost approximately 1,700 million dinars, represents the longest highway built in a single phase in the country. Officials stated that this decision is intended to ensure “the continuity of public service, technical expertise, and state oversight of vital transport networks.”

Head of Government Sarra Zaâfrani Zenzri has also called for the acceleration of construction on the A2 to ensure the highway successfully connects Tunis to various interior regions.
