Sources: 3. Developments: 2. The Turano River in the Lazio region has faced a critical environmental crisis characterized by severe water shortages. For several months, sections of the river downstream from the artificial lake dam have been nearly dry, with some stretches of the riverbed reaching 1.5 kilometers in length. Disputes have emerged regarding water management. Enel, the entity managing the dam, maintains that its water release of 200 liters per second complies with a 1950 regulation. However, local advocates and critics argue this flow is insufficient to sustain the ecosystem, noting that existing regulations suggest a minimum flow of 300 liters per second in areas where irrigation is possible. This has led to calls for the regional council to update outdated management rules. In response to the situation, residents and environmental groups have taken action. Following formal inquiries submitted to the regional council, Legambiente organized a symbolic violin concert on the dry riverbed in Rocca Sinibalda to mark World Rivers Day. The event aimed to draw attention to the river’s state, which local citizens and municipal authorities describe as a “near-death” condition. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-28: Turano River residents protest water shortages with symbolic concert Legambiente held a symbolic violin concert on the dry bed of Italy's Turano River to protest water shortages caused by insufficient dam releases. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turano-river-residents-protest-water-shortages-with-symbolic-concert ### 2026-09-20: Turano River drying prompts inquiry in Lazio region Lazio regional officials are investigating the drying of the Turano River, which has left stretches of the riverbed parched due to insufficient water release from the Enel-managed dam. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turano-river-drying-prompts-inquiry-in-lazio-region --- Cite as: Turano River water scarcity and management dispute.
