Sources: 15. Developments: 2. The Turkish Ministry of Interior initiated a nationwide awareness campaign to improve school security and prevent unauthorized access to firearms. Under instructions from Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi, police departments in several provinces began issuing SMS warnings to licensed gun owners, advising them to store weapons and magazines separately in locked locations to prevent access by children. Following these efforts, the National Education Minister, Yusuf Tekin, expanded the focus by calling for increased parental responsibility. He noted that school security measures are insufficient if children can access weapons at home, citing the risk of students bringing firearms to educational institutions. In response, the Ministry is implementing social media monitoring and family training programs, while local police departments, such as those in Konya, continue to issue urgent warnings regarding the safe storage of ammunition and weapons. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-06: Turkish officials urge parental responsibility to prevent child access to firearms Turkish officials and police are urging parents to secure firearms at home following concerns that children are accessing weapons and bringing them to schools, contributing to rising school violence. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turkish-officials-urge-parental-responsibility-to-prevent-child-access-to-firearms ### 2026-09-29: Turkey Ministry of Interior issues firearm safety warnings Turkey's Ministry of Interior has launched a campaign to warn licensed firearm owners via SMS and written notices to store weapons securely and prevent access by children, following recent school security-concる 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turkey-ministry-of-interior-launches-firearm-safety-campaign --- Cite as: Turkey firearm safety and school security initiative.
