Since early June 2026 a wave of roof fires, retaining‑wall failures, demolition collapses and scaffold accidents has struck construction sites and abandoned structures across Turkey. Technical assessments linked the incidents to poor mortar, clogged drainage, flawed design and inadequate supervision, prompting province‑wide inspections, safety cordons and relocations of residents.

Key events include a roof fire in Bilecik, a retaining‑wall collapse in Rize (10 July), scaffolding platform failures in Balçova (İzmir) and Beylikdüzü (Istanbul), a demolition error in Küçükçekmece that toppled a neighboring block, wall collapse during a concrete pour in Arnavutköy, and landslides injuring workers in Antalya, Batman and other provinces. On 18 July four workers died in separate incidents (scaffold falls, a drilling accident and a truck overturn) and five were injured after a scaffold collapse in Gercüş. Authorities launched investigations, opened safety audits and called for stricter enforcement.

A balcony and upper‑wall collapse on 26 July in a vacant five‑storey building in Kartal’s Esentepe neighbourhood, where scrap‑metal workers had stripped rebar and illegal activity was reported, intensified fears of unsecured structures. Emergency services cordoned the site and an investigation was opened.

Early August added two further fatalities: a 35‑year‑old worker fell into an elevator shaft in Tatvan, Bitlis Province, and another worker was buried under soil after a collapse in Antakya, Hatay Province. Both incidents spurred additional inquiries and renewed calls for tighter safety protocols at construction sites nationwide.
