Sources: 5. Developments: 2. Efforts to restore historical mosques damaged by earthquakes in Turkey show varying levels of progress across different regions. In Kilis, the restoration of the 400-year-old Akcurun Mosque is nearing completion. Coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the General Directorate of Foundations, the project involved reinforcing the minaret, roof, and walls with steel tension rods and injection applications to protect against future seismic activity. Officials noted that 12 of 22 heavily damaged foundation cultural assets in Kilis have now been restored. Conversely, the 300-year-old Aksaray Mosque in Elazığ remains closed and in a state of ruin. Despite being designated a historical site, the mosque has been neglected for six years following a 2020 earthquake. Its condition was further worsened by the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes and a fire. While funds have been allocated and tenders issued, local residents report that restoration work has stalled. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-05: Aksaray Mosque in Elazığ awaits restoration after six years The 300-year-old Aksaray Mosque in Elazığ remains closed and in ruins six years after earthquake damage, as local residents call for its long-awaited restoration. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/aksaray-mosque-in-elaz-awaits-restoration-after-six-years ### 2026-09-26: Akcurun Mosque restoration nears completion in Kilis Restoration of the 400-year-old Akcurun Mosque in Kilis, damaged in the February 2023 earthquakes, is entering its final stages to preserve its historical identity and seismic resilience. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/akcurun-mosque-restoration-nears-completion-in-kilis --- Cite as: Turkish earthquake-damaged mosque restorations.
