In Istanbul, a naval parade through the Bosphorus featured 15 vessels, including the TCG İstanbul, the nation’s first national frigate. Other vessels, such as the TCG Yıldırım and TCG Edincik, were opened to the public for inspections in Tekirdağ and Erdek Port. During the commemorations, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Defense Minister Yaşar Güler linked the historical 1538 victory of Ottoman admiral Hayreddin Barbarossa to modern maritime strategy. Erdoğan stated that the historical triumph ‘turned the Mediterranean into a Turkish lake.’ Defense Minister Güler connected this legacy to contemporary naval activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, specifically referencing the ‘Blue Homeland’ (Mavi Vatan) doctrine and Turkish interests in Cyprus. Additionally, Minister of Energy Alparslan Bayraktar noted Turkey’s current maritime energy capabilities, highlighting the operation of one of the world’s four largest energy fleets in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-28: Erdoğan invokes Battle of Preveza to claim Mediterranean as ‘Turkish lake’ Turkish President Erdoğan commemorated the 488th anniversary of the Battle of Preveza, claiming the historical victory turned the Mediterranean into a ‘Turkish lake’ to emphasize modern naval strength. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/erdoan-invokes-battle-of-preveza-to-claim-mediterranean-as-turkish-lake ### 2026-09-27: Turkey celebrates 488th anniversary of Preveze Naval Victory Turkey marked the 488th anniversary of the Preveze Naval Victory and Navy Day with a major naval parade in the Bosphorus and public ship visits in various ports. 17 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/turkey-celebrates-preveze-naval-victory-and-navy-day --- Cite as: Turkish Navy Day and maritime strategy commemorations.
