Sources: 7. Developments: 5. The TVB drama ‘City of Splendor’ premiered on October 12, centering on a power struggle within the Macau-based Shanglifeng Group. The plot follows the rivalry between brothers Guan Xiaoxian, played by Chilam Cheung, and Guan Xiaojun, played by Ronald Cheng, as they compete for the chairmanship following their father's retirement. While Chilam Cheung received praise for his calculating characterization, the premiere also drew attention for an intense romantic scene between his character and a media executive played by Chan Siu-wa. Following its premiere, the production has faced intense scrutiny regarding its maturity level and the use of provocative content. Previous controversies involved explicit scenes featuring Rosina Chan and sexual content involving Samantha Ko. The debate has since expanded to include actress Cheung Hei-man, who faced scrutiny over a semi-nude, single-take sequence with co-star Julian Cheung. Reports indicate Cheung initially resisted the request, causing a three-month production delay, before filming it after discussions regarding character development. Former TVB artist Lok Yan-ming criticized the production on social media, labeling the reliance on female bodies as “low-class” and distinguishing between artistic nudity and “vulgar showing off.” Producer Chan Wai-kwun has since addressed the controversies, including complaints to the Communications Authority regarding content maturity involving actresses Rosita Kwok and Gigi Yip. Chan denied allegations that a director circulated unreleased footage of Gigi Yip and emphasized the professionalism of the team. Regarding Rosita Kwok, Chan clarified that while she initially hesitated due to the technical complexity of a long-take sequence, the intensity was consistent with the script. He denied that the team pressured her, stating the single-take method was intended to enhance dramatic impact rather than increase nudity. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-25: TVB producer addresses controversy over City of Splendour scenes TVB producer Chan Wai-kwun denies allegations of pressuring actresses or leaking footage following controversies over explicit scenes in the drama ‘City of Splendour’. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tvb-producer-addresses-controversy-over-city-of-splendour-scenes ### 2026-10-23: TVB drama City of Splendor sparks controversy over nudity TVB's “City of Splendor” faces backlash and formal complaints over controversial nudity and the use of provocative scenes to drive viewership. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tvb-drama-city-of-splendor-sparks-controversy-over-content-and-acting ### 2026-10-16: TVB drama City of Splendour sparks controversy and regulatory complaints TVB’s ‘City of Splendour’ faces backlash and 28 regulatory complaints following a provocative scene by Rosamund Kwan, amid debates over prime-time broadcasting standards and repetitive drama tropes. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tvb-drama-city-of-splendour-sparks-controversy-over-explicit-scenes ### 2026-10-13: TVB drama City of Splendor premieres with focus on power struggles The TVB drama ‘City of Splendor’ premiered, focusing on a power struggle within a Macau conglomerate and the intense rivalry between two brothers. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/tvb-drama-city-of-splendor-premieres-with-focus-on-power-struggles ### 2026-10-04: Chilam Cheung to play villainous role in TVB drama City of Splendor Chilam Cheung will play a dark, villainous role in the upcoming TVB drama ‘City of Splendor’, portraying a complex character involved in psychological abuse and intense sibling rivalry. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/chilam-cheung-to-play-villainous-role-in-tvb-drama-city-of-splendor --- Cite as: TVB drama City of Splendor release and controversy.
