In the UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament, the University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons began the season with a 2-0 record after a 94-75 victory over Ateneo de Manila University. However, the Fighting Maroons' undefeated streak ended when the National University (NU) Bulldogs defeated them 72-64 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. NU secured a “wire-to-wire victory” fueled by an early 21-4 run. Reinhard Jumamoy led the Bulldogs with 14 points, while Paul Francisco contributed 11 points and six steals. Despite a late rally from UP, including a four-point play by Miguel Yñiguez, NU maintained control to hand UP its first loss. This result brought NU to a 2-1 record, creating a three-way tie for first place between NU, UP, and Ateneo de Manila University. Following this, the NU Bulldogs continued their momentum with an 85-66 victory over the Adamson Soaring Falcons. PJ Palacielo led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 8 assists, and Mo Diassana recorded a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Although Adamson narrowed the lead to six points during a third-quarter rally, NU pulled away in the final period. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-07: UAAP Season 89: NU Bulldogs and Ateneo Blue Eagles secure victories The NU Bulldogs defeated the Adamson Soaring Falcons 85-66 in men's basketball, while the Ateneo Blue Eagles secured their first women's basketball win of UAAP Season 89 against DLSU. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/uaap-season-89-nu-bulldogs-and-ateneo-blue-eagles-secure-victories ### 2026-09-26: National University upsets UP to hand Fighting Maroons first loss The NU Bulldogs handed the UP Fighting Maroons their first loss of the UAAP Season 89 men's basketball tournament with a 72-64 wire-to-wire victory. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/national-university-upsets-up-to-hand-fighting-maroons-first-loss ### 2026-09-19: UP Fighting Maroons defeat Ateneo to lead UAAP standings The UP Fighting Maroons moved to 2-0 in the UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball Tournament after defeating Ateneo de Manila University 94-75. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/up-fighting-maroons-defeat-ateneo-to-lead-uaap-standings --- Cite as: UAAP Season 89 Men’s Basketball tournament.
