The United Arab Emirates is expanding its efforts to combat financial crime, focusing on money laundering and technological threats. The National Anti-Money Laundering Committee has reported that 95% of its 2024-2027 national strategy is already implemented, aimed at strengthening the financial system ahead of FATF evaluations.

To address digital threats, the Ministry of Interior has expanded ‘Operation Confrontation Ghost’ to include 30 countries and 13 private sector partners. This initiative targets AI-enabled fraud, online sextortion, and digital scams through real-time intelligence sharing.

In its capacity as chair of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF), the UAE intends to propose a regional initiative to study fraud patterns and associated money laundering. Announced by MENAFATF President Hamad Saif Al Zaabi, the proposal seeks to build a shared regional knowledge base to monitor methods used in banking, electronic, investment, and real estate fraud, as well as virtual assets and hawala channels. The initiative also aims to address challenges regarding the freezing, seizing, and recovery of criminal proceeds.
