Developments: 2. The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) has held ceremonies to honor historical student leaders and preserve the memory of the Dominican student movement. In late September, the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture commemorated the 56th anniversary of the assassination of student leader Amín Abel Hasbún. Rector Jorge Asjana David and other university officials led a ceremony involving a floral offering, describing Hasbún as a “reference point” for the university and emphasizing the importance of defending public education. In October, the Faculty of Juridical and Political Sciences expanded these efforts by recognizing former presidents and general secretaries of the Dominican Students' Federation (FED). The ceremony honored living former leaders and issued posthumous honors to figures including Andújar Domínguez, Amín Abel Hasbún, and Hatuey de Camps. Rector Asjana David noted that the university’s current democratic atmosphere is a result of the student movement’s efforts to challenge previous regimes. The faculty also expressed plans to establish a museum dedicated to FED leaders. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-23: UASD honors Dominican student movement leaders The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo honored former leaders of the Dominican Students' Federation to celebrate their historical role in promoting democracy and academic freedom. 11 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/economist-pedro-silverio-lvarez-releases-book-on-dominican-public-economy ### 2026-09-28: UASD commemorates 56th anniversary of Amín Abel Hasbún assassination The Autonomous University of Santo Domingo commemorated the 56th anniversary of student leader Amín Abel Hasbún’s assassination with a floral offering and ceremony honoring his legacy. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/uasd-commemorates-56th-anniversary-of-amn-abel-hasbn-assassination --- Cite as: UASD student leadership commemorations.
