The UEFA Europa League 2026-27 league phase matchup between Lech Poznań and Sunderland AFC at the Municipal Stadium in Poznań, Poland, concluded in a 1-1 draw on Thursday, October 22.

Sunderland took an early lead in the second minute through Tymur Tutierov. However, the Polish champions managed to equalize in the 70th minute via Leo Bengtsson. Despite efforts to secure a win, including a close attempt by Malick Fofana, Sunderland was unable to break the deadlock. Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka started the match and played until his substitution in the 63rd minute. The draw maintains Sunderland’s undefeated record in the competition, bringing their total to seven points from three matches.

For Lech Poznań, the single point provides crucial relief following two previous 4-0 defeats against Crystal Palace and Bayer Leverkusen. While Sunderland continues to struggle domestically at the bottom of the Premier League, their continental form remains strong. Both teams entered the fixture managing various squad absences, including injuries to Lech Poznań’s Alex Douglas, Ali Gholizadeh, and Wojciech Monka, as well as Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor and Thomas Meunier.

Following the match, Sunderland players and fans expressed admiration for the atmosphere created by the Polish supporters, specifically noting the impact of the crowd’s energy and the stadium facilities.
