The Republic of Ireland Under-21 football team secured a place in the Euro U21 play-offs after a 3-1 victory over England at Turner’s Cross. Tommy Lonergan scored twice and Conor McManus added a third goal, utilizing a high-pressing tactic to end England’s 12-game unbeaten streak.

This result allowed Ireland to finish second in their group, ahead of Slovakia via a head-to-head tiebreaker. The achievement follows a recovery from a difficult period where the team had previously trailed Slovakia by eight points following losses to Andorra and Moldova.
