In Uganda, the government is addressing challenges within its Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) vaccination programme. Agriculture Minister Frank Tumwebaze reported investigations into veterinary officers who allegedly demanded illegal cash payments from farmers instead of using approved online platforms. To mitigate high costs for livestock keepers, Uganda is partnering with Egypt to establish a local vaccine manufacturing factory, which is expected to reduce the current prices of Shs8,000 for cattle and Shs4,000 for goats and sheep.

Minister Tumwebaze later clarified that under the national cost recovery scheme, farmers are only responsible for the cost of vaccine doses, while the government funds procurement, cold chain infrastructure, transport, and laboratory diagnosis. This scheme aims to maintain a revolving vaccine supply.
