Following a clarification from Buckingham Palace regarding the status of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Uganda briefly withdrew from the Invictus Games. The Palace issued a letter via the Lord Chamberlain stating that the couple are non-working members of the Royal Family and should be treated as private citizens without HRH titles.

In response, Uganda’s military head, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced the country would withdraw from the competition to avoid appearing opposed to King Charles III, noting Uganda would not participate in events lacking the monarch’s approval.

However, Uganda has since reversed this decision. Following a telephone intervention by a senior advisor to King Charles III, the Ugandan Ministry of Defence confirmed that the Uganda People's Defence Force has approved its participation in the 2027 Invictus Games. This reversal followed a conversation between General Kainerugaba and Sir Clive Alderton, the King’s Private Secretary, which clarified the monarch’s position and addressed concerns regarding the relationship between the British Royal Family and Prince Harry, the founder of the games.
