The ABC comedy-drama series ‘Ugly Betty’ is marking its 20th anniversary since its premiere on September 28, 2006. An adaptation of the Colombian telenovela ‘Yo soy Betty, la fea’, the show was created by the late Silvio Horta and executive produced by Salma Hayek. The series follows Betty Suarez, a character from Queens portrayed by America Ferrera, as she navigates the fashion industry at Mode magazine.

During its original run from 2006 to 2010, the series received significant critical acclaim. America Ferrera won an Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG Award for her performance in the first season, while the program itself earned a Golden Globe for Best Comedy or Musical Series. The series premiere originally drew over 10 million viewers.

To celebrate the milestone, cast members including America Ferrera, Michael Urie, Vanessa Williams, and Ana Ortiz have shared reflections. Urie, who played Marc St. James, described the series as his ‘perfect big break’. In a reunion interview on Good Morning America, the cast discussed the show’s lasting influence and its decision to address social issues such as LGBTQ representation and immigration. Tony Plana, who portrayed Ignacio Suarez, highlighted the cultural impact of a storyline involving his character’s deportation, while Ferrera remarked that the show, which centered on a Mexican American family, was ‘ahead of its time’.
