UK automotive industry bodies are campaigning to increase the maximum fee for Class 4 MOT tests, which has been capped at £54.85 since 2010. The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is seeking to raise this cap to £95, citing unsustainable rising costs in labor, rent, energy, equipment, and staff training.

In addition to the IGA’s proposal, the Independent Automotive Aftermarket Federation (IAAF) has suggested converting the current cap into a statutory minimum to prevent heavily discounted tests. The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) has also supported a review, with its CEO stating that a fee update is “urgently overdue” to account for inflation.

Industry representatives have scheduled meetings and roundtables for late October to discuss these issues with the Department for Transport. The IGA has warned that failure to adjust fees could result in reduced testing capacity, longer wait times, and fewer appointment options for motorists.
