The United Kingdom has implemented new immigration regulations designed to protect victims of modern slavery who hold Skilled Worker visas. Under these rules, which took effect on October 8, 2026, individuals formally recognized through the National Referral Mechanism are no longer strictly tied to a specific sponsor.

This change allows victims to leave abusive employers and seek new employment, including self-employment or voluntary work, for the remainder of their visa term without risking their immigration status. The measure is discretionary, with the Home Office determining the specific conditions under which work requirements are eased. Notably, professional athletes and sports coaches are excluded from these provisions.

Minister for Migration and Citizenship Jo White stated that the changes are intended to give victims the “freedom to leave abusive workplaces and rebuild their lives.” The government also noted ongoing efforts to combat exploitation by targeting rogue sponsors, having revoked licenses for more than 6,600 sponsors.
