The United Kingdom is advancing its transition toward digital railway systems through the rollout of the European Train Control System (ETCS) and the broader European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS).

Initial efforts included the appointment of DB ESG to Network Rail’s survey framework. The company was tasked with providing independent vehicle survey reports using 3D scanning and manual inspections to inform the design and installation of ETCS equipment on passenger and freight rolling stock.

Following these survey capabilities, implementation has moved into the installation phase. Loram has begun installing Hitachi Rail’s ETCS digital in-cab signalling equipment on a second rail grinder (C44-02) in Derby. This project, funded by the East Coast Digital Programme (ECDP), aims to facilitate the removal of traditional lineside signals on key routes such as the East Coast Main Line.
