Bologna goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski has faced a period of professional instability involving disciplinary issues and poor on-field performance.

In mid-September 2026, Skorupski was sidelined from the Bologna squad for a Serie A match against Napoli. Sporting director Marco di Vaio stated the goalkeeper was punished for arriving late to a tactical briefing, an action taken in accordance with internal club regulations. During his absence, 18-year-old Massimo Pessina made his debut in goal.

Following his return, Skorupski has faced intense criticism from Italian media due to high-profile errors, including a failure to secure a shot during a draw against Torino and a previous long-range goal conceded against Atalanta Bergamo. This decline in club form has coincided with his exclusion from the Polish national team, where he has not been selected by coach Jan Urban for approximately one year.

On October 10, 2026, manager Raffaele Palladino addressed the decision to bench the 35-year-old Skorupski in favor of Pessina during a Serie A match against Lecce. Palladino characterized the move as a “purely sporting decision” intended to foster the development of the teenager, noting that Pessina had returned from national team duties with high energy. Palladino defended the choice despite a mistake made by the young goalkeeper during the match.
