Researchers in South Korea have demonstrated that Shear Wave Elastography (SWE), conducted during routine abdominal ultrasounds, can effectively predict liver cancer risk and serious complications in patients with Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).

The study, published in the journal ‘Hepatology’, found that SWE’s predictive accuracy was comparable to conventional Vibration-Controlled Transient Elastography (VCTE). This suggests that SWE, when used alongside the FIB-4 index, can identify high-risk patients without requiring specialized diagnostic equipment.
