Developments: 2. Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon has gained attention for his modest lifestyle, specifically his decision to continue driving an eight-year-old Renault Vel Satis. Simon stated his intention to use the vehicle “until the engine gives out” and as long as it can transport him to training. Following these observations of his discrete personal character, Simon was honored at the Ballon d’Or Gala at the London Palladium, where he received the Yashin Trophy for being recognized as the world’s best goalkeeper. During an emotional acceptance speech, Simon paid tribute to the late Koldo Asua, a former Athletic Club official, noting that Asua taught him that football transcends individual titles and that it is more important to be remembered as a “good person and teammate.” In a rare mention of his private life, Simon also dedicated words to his girlfriend, describing her as an “oasis of tranquility” amidst the chaos of professional football. Former player Iker Muniain praised the achievement, noting that having a player of Simon’s caliber is a luxury for Athletic Club, where the goalkeeper intends to retire. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-26: Unai Simón wins Yashin Trophy at Ballon d'Or gala Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón won the Yashin Trophy at the Ballon d'Or gala, honoring his professional excellence and dedicating his speech to mentor Koldo Asua and his partner. 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/unai-simn-honored-as-worlds-best-goalkeeper-at-ballon-dor-gala ### 2026-09-26: Unai Simon draws praise for driving modest Renault Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon has gained praise for his modesty, revealing he continues to drive an eight-year-old Renault Vel Satis rather than luxury vehicles. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/unai-simon-draws-praise-for-driving-modest-renault --- Cite as: Unai Simon career and lifestyle profile.
