# Underwater archaeology in the Oosterschelde

Archaeologists from the Dutch Rijksdienst voor het Cultureel Erfgoed have initiated underwater research in the Oosterschelde to document submerged cultural heritage. Using the vessel Gerdia, the team has been examining the remains of the drowned village of Lodijke, including its castle foundations, and documenting a shipwreck located near the Zeeland Bridge.

Lead diver and archaeologist Miriam Kruijssen noted that while previous efforts focused on the Wadden Sea, the waters of Zeeland contain many submerged sites that have lacked professional attention. The project seeks to catalog and preserve these artifacts, which are subject to difficult diving conditions caused by strong winds and currents. Findings from the research are intended to be showcased at the Zeeuws Archeologisch Depot in Middelburg.
