# Underwater exploration of Shipden settlement

Divers from the British Sub-Aqua Club have conducted underwater explorations of Shipden, a medieval settlement off the coast of Cromer, Norfolk, that was submerged by the North Sea approximately 700 years ago.

Initial efforts focused on mapping the site and investigating local legends, such as the myth of a bell ringing from the depths. While divers photographed 25 man-made features and created 3D models, they failed to find definitive evidence of a church, which may suggest local myths are incorrect or that the site was altered by an 1888 shipwreck.

Subsequent documentation identified flint-built remains, cut stone, and stone caissons, some of which stand eight to ten courses high. Researchers are currently investigating whether these structures were part of a 14th-century coastal defense against erosion or part of a pier authorized in 1390. Historical records from the 1086 Domesday Book note that Shipden once housed 117 residents before being lost to the sea.
