# UNFPA study on economic security and marriage decisions

In early July 2026 the United Nations Population Fund released a global report concluding that economic security is a primary factor influencing people’s desires to marry and have children. The findings highlighted that uncertainty about income, housing and employment drives decisions about family formation worldwide.

By the end of July, UNFPA’s Resident Representative Muriel Mafico elaborated on the report with country‑specific data from Nigeria. The 2026 Demographic Futures Survey showed many Nigerian youths are postponing marriage and parenthood because of unemployment, high living and housing costs, insecurity and limited access to services. Despite still valuing marriage and preferring small families, they cite economic instability as the main barrier. Mafico called on governments to provide stable jobs, affordable housing, health care, parental leave and childcare to enable autonomous family choices.
