Discussions regarding the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) mandate have intensified as its scheduled expiration on December 31, 2026, approaches.

Human Rights Watch has urged the United Nations to extend the mandate, warning that a withdrawal without a robust international replacement could leave millions of Lebanese civilians “vulnerable to human rights abuses and physical violence.” The organization noted that the force serves as a “crucial deterrent” during hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

In diplomatic developments, Russia has expressed its support for renewing the mandate. During meetings between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgi Borisenko and Lebanese officials, Russia reaffirmed its commitment to Lebanon’s “unity and territorial integrity” and expressed readiness to assist the country across political, military, and economic sectors.
