The University for Development Studies (UDS) from Ghana achieved significant success in continental and regional university football. In September 2026, UDS won the African university football title for the second consecutive year after defeating Tanzania’s Julius Nyerere University 2–1 in the final held in Cairo. This victory marked the first time an African university successfully defended a continental title.

However, the institution’s momentum shifted during the 15th West African University Games (WAUG) in Nigeria. Despite an initial 4-2 victory over Nigeria’s Afe Babalola University, UDS was eliminated in the semi-finals. Following a goalless draw against host Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in regulation time, UDS lost 4-3 in a penalty shootout, ending their attempt to retain the WAUG football title.
