Labor disputes involving academic and support staff are emerging at major universities. At the University of Sydney, employees led by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) initiated a 24-hour strike due to a deadlock in enterprise bargaining. The protest focuses on job security, casual employment, and the need for protections against the use of artificial intelligence to reduce staff-student contact or replace human teaching.

At the University of Toronto, more than 6,100 administrative, technical, and academic support workers represented by United Steelworkers Local 1998 recently voted overwhelmingly for a strike mandate, with 96 percent of ballots cast in favor. The union, which includes IT workers, lab assistants, and academic advisors, sought resolutions regarding wages, workload, and protections against artificial intelligence. Union president John Ankenman highlighted concerns over a university plan to save $20 million by not replacing departing employees, which could increase the workload for remaining staff.

Following the strike mandate, which threatened to disrupt the start of classes on September 8, the University of Toronto reached a tentative agreement with the union. If ratified by the membership, the new collective agreement will remain in effect until June 30, 2029. The union has planned a ratification information town hall to present the details of the deal to its members before a final vote.
